The Mental Health Association in Orange County is a non-profit organization based in Carrboro, North Carolina.
We are dedicated to engaging with local citizens to promote the mental health of our community and  to improve the lives of our residents living with mental illnesses.
Welcome...
Statistics from the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) tell us that about one in four adults over the age of 18 suffer with a diagnosable mental illness in a given year. Translated, that is over a quarter of our entire U.S. adult population - nearly 58 million people who are faced with finding resources, medications, medical, and family supports to treat their mental health condition each year. These figures don't even include children and adolescents under the age of 18, so the true number of Americans actually effected by mental illness each year is even greater than these statistics.

America is in the midst of a mental health crisis, yet our government continues to cut funding for services and supports each year, resulting in the over-burdening of our prison systems and homeless populations. Our communities in Orange County, North Carolina have also been effected by mental health budget and program cuts causing consumers and their family members to feel overwhelmed and often helpless.

The Mental Health Association in Orange County (MHAOC) is a leader in raising awareness about mental health issues and concerns that effect our community. Despite the challenges of funding needs vs. opportunities, the MHAOC continues to provide quality programs for consumers to keep them engaged, lift them up, validate their efforts, provide supports and resources, as well as help educate families and the community on issues that address stigma, social and legislative reform, fair housing and employment of the mentally ill, and many other issues.

It is our goal through this website - whether you are a mental health consumer, family member, professional provider, or community resident - to provide you with helpful information that might motivate you to get involved.

Our ultimate goal is to open minds and change lives. We hope you will join us in this effort.

The Mental Health Association in Orange County (MHAOC) is a 501 (c) (3), non-profit organization supported by private and corporate donations and grants, as well as by a strong corps of volunteers who graciously contribute their time to many of the detailed needs of our organization. Additionally, we host a major fund-raising event annually, The Vintage Faire, which raises about $10,000 to $15,000 towards the general operating budget each year.

Like most non-profit organizations in post 9-11 America today, the MHAOC struggles to receive adequate funds to sustain our operation year-to-year. Many non-profit groups have had to close their doors in recent years due to lost funding sources, but the MHAOC has been blessed by enough support from the community we serve to maintain operations and serve consumers in our region.

If you would like to make a donation - either financial, or of your time - please contact our executive director, Mark Sullivan, at 919.942.8083, or by email at info@mhaorangeco.org today. Your contributions will help sustain vital community programs, including:
-- Community Back Yard
-- Compeer
-- Family Advocacy Network
-- MHAOC operations and other outreach projects
-- Northside Community Garden
-- Strengthening Families
